Soak it up while you can; Toronto’s recent taste of summer-like warmth is about to come to a crashing halt.
A strong cold front is on its way to sweep into southern Ontario, bringing the threat of severe, damaging thunderstorms across the GTA before a dramatic temperature drop hits the city. If you’ve been enjoying the 29 degree sunshine, hit your nearest patio while you can, as things are about to take a chaotic turn.
According to The Weather Network, the unusual heat and humidity will peak through Tuesday afternoon, setting the perfect stage for severe weather to ignite. While the storm tracking is expected to start earlier in the day near Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, the focus will quickly shift directly into the 401 corridor and the Greater Toronto Area by the evening.
Be prepared for a potentially intense evening commute. The approaching line of storms carries the risk of heavy downpours, frequent lightning, large hail, and damaging wind gusts. Because of the sheer strength of the front, localized flooding could happen fast, and weather experts warn that the chance of a tornado cannot completely be ruled out.
Once the storms push east into Quebec overnight, the real shock to the system arrives. A huge cooldown is trailing right behind the storm front, and temperatures across Southern Ontario are expected to plummet by more than 20 degrees in less than 24 hours.
While some areas of the province will drop from a balmy 30 degrees Celsius down to the single digits overnight, Toronto residents will wake up on Wednesday morning to a crisp, windy reality that feels a lot more like early spring than mid-summer.
The severe weather threat will shift well south of the border by mid-week, leaving the GTA with cooler, gusty conditions. For today, be sure to pack an umbrella and be safe!
