Today, Eugenia Falls and the village that shares its name remain among Ontario’s most scenic hidden gems, especially during fall colour season.
Cuckoo Valley is the name of the scenic gorge at the base of the falls, and the best way to experience it is along the trail that follows its edge. A short loop leads to a lookout overlooking the Beaver River as it plunges 30 metres over the Niagara Escarpment. In autumn, vibrant fall colours transform the surrounding valley, making it one of the area’s most picturesque times to visit.
Along the route, visitors will also pass through a tunnel and find a historic war memorial and pavilion within the park grounds. These landmarks add a bit of history and character to an already beautiful hike.
Safety & Access
As the tallest waterfall in the area, safety is taken seriously here. Access to the base of the falls is prohibited, with fencing and signage in place to protect visitors from the steep and potentially hazardous terrain below.
Instead, the site is designed to be enjoyed from designated viewing areas, including a lookout with a stone retaining wall that offers safe, unobstructed views of the waterfall and surrounding valley. Fortunately, the falls are just as impressive from above, making the lookout the perfect place to take in the scenery.
It’s also worth noting that water flow over the falls can vary throughout the year, as some of the Beaver River is diverted upstream for hydroelectric generation. As a result, the volume of water flowing over the falls can change significantly from season to season. The waterfall is typically at its most impressive after periods of heavy rainfall.
If the parking lot is full, nearby attractions such as Old Baldy Conservation Area and Epping Lookout offer excellent alternatives just a short drive away. Both provide scenic views and make worthwhile additions to a day spent exploring Grey County. No matter when you visit, taking the time to walk the full trail loop is the best way to experience this scenic corner of the region.
