If you’re planning a European getaway this year, you’ll want to be aware of some new entry requirements before departure which may apply to you!
Launching later in 2025, Canadian passport holders will require travel authorization from the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) prior to visiting 30 participating countries, including popular destinations like France, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.
The program aims to improve border security and traveller experience, and the application process requires a small fee.
Here’s what you need to know before booking your next European escape:
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS is a new travel authorization system that will be required for visa-exempt travellers, including Canadians. While it is not a visa, the pre-travel authorization helps European authorities assess visitors before they arrive.
Travellers must apply online for ETIAS, providing personal details, passport information, employment history, and information on previous travel to conflict zones or criminal convictions.
Having an ETIAS approval does not guarantee entry—border officials will still verify passports and other documents upon arrival.
Application and Costs
The ETIAS application process is completed entirely online via the official website or app, and is designed to be quick and straightforward. The fee for the authorization is €7, with exemptions for travellers under 18 or over 70.
Certain family members of EU citizens or individuals with mobility rights in the EU may also qualify for exemptions.
Processing Time
Tourists should apply well in advance, before even booking flights or accommodation according to the official website. While it states that most applications are processed within minutes and a decision will be received within four days, the period could be extended by up to 14 days if you are requested to provide additional information or documentation.
If you are invited for an interview, the period could take up to 30 days, to be sure to give yourself plenty of time prior to travelling.
How long is your ETIAS valid for?
The ETIAS authorization is valid for short-term stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period and is issued for three years or until the travel document used in the application expires.
Also, make sure your passport is valid for at least three months after your intended departure from any European countries requiring ETIAS, or you may be refused entry at the border.
When does the ETIAS system begin?
As of now, there is no official launch date for ETIAS. The website states it is not yet in operation, and no action is required from travellers just yet. The European Union will inform about the start of ETIAS several months prior to its launch.
