If you’re ever in the mood for a simple cheese pizza, you don’t have to travel too far to grab a slice of the best in the world.
Hamilton’s Cowabunga Pizzeria attended last month’s Pizza Expo held in Las Vegas, and, despite a chaotic journey to get there, was crowned the world’s best cheese slice.
The restaurant’s co-owners Andy Huynh and Justin Tanda travelled from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Las Vegas ahead of the competition, with a checked cooler filled with their pizza dough, cheese and sauce.
Upon landing, they realized the cooler didn’t make it, and was left behind by the airline.
Luckily, they had a few back-up doughs to make it through the first round with, despite having to source their toppings at the expo.
For the finals, they ended up flying one of their staff out from Hamilton on a last-minute flight, armed with their signature fermented dough in his carry-on.
“So many buzzer beater moments on our road to winning this competition,” their Instagram post reads.
It all paid off when Cowabunga won the title of the world’s best slice of cheese pizza, which is sure to be game-changing for the business.
You can find them located at 536 Upper Wellington St, Hamilton.
