This fall, head out for an adventure to Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower just north of the village of Dorset if you want to catch a breathtaking view like no other. Right off Highway 35, this stunning lookout is the perfect activity to cross off your fall bucket list, as it offers elevated 360 views of the fall foliage that Ontario is famous for.
The original tower was built in 1922 and stands at 25 metres high. In the 60s, it was used as a fire lookout tower until watchmen became obsolete. The current tower, built in 1967, is now 30 metres high and was erected specifically for visitors.
For the second year in a row, it is now required to buy tickets in advance to access the tower. Head to the official website or call 1-866-364-4498 to resrve a timed slot. The good news is that, although you have to arrive during your pre-determined time slot, there’s no limit to how little or long you want to stay. On weekdays, tickets are first come, first serve if you buy them at arrival.
The views are of Lake of Bays and the surrounding trees at 142 metres up, making for a photo-worthy view.
Until October 29th, the tower is open from 9am to 6pm with last entry at 5pm. After October 29th, hours are dependent on the weather.
Some tips for enjoying the tower during the popular fall season:
Be patient, come early, and be prepared with food and drinks. Remember to keep the area clean when coming and going. If driving, don’t come to any sudden stops. Dogs aren’t allowed at the site. The site also includes some picnic benches, outhouses facilities, a kiosk and gift shop, and a hiking trail.
