A former limestone quarry in Ontario is one of the most unique places to beat the heat this summer – and it’s reopening soon!
Since it closed its industrial doors decades ago, Elora Quarry’s emerald basin has been a beloved summer destinations for locals on hot days.
The two-acre conservation area is enclosed by sweeping, 40-foot limestone cliffs that will transport you far away from the concrete jungle of Toronto. Surrounded by lush cedar forests, this hidden paradise officially kicks off its 2026 summer season on June 12 2026, welcoming sun-seekers daily all the way through to Labour Day.
The deep-water limestone basin offers visitors a pristine place to float, paddle, and cool off all season long. There is also a sandy beach on the water’s edge, giving children and sunbathers plenty of room to lounge.
The quarry also features a one-kilometre loop trail that winds around the perimeter of the clifftops, offering spectacular, panoramic views of the adjacent Grand River. Once you’ve dried off, you can pack a picnic basket to enjoy the shaded, first-come, first-served areas, or take a quick drive into the neighbouring historic village of Elora to discover its famous European charm, independent eateries, and artisan shops.
The Details
Due to its popularity in recent years, guests are required to secure their entry online ahead of time. You can pick between two four-hour sessions: the morning slot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or the afternoon stretch from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The Elora Quarry sits just over an hour northwest of Toronto, with adult admission tickets costing $12.50. Tickets for children (ages 4–12) sit at $6.50, and little ones under three can enter for free. Just keep in mind that you’ll also need to grab a separate $18 vehicle parking permit online in advance to secure your spot in the lot.
