Outdoor skating rinks have begun to open up in the city for the season, and one you definitely should add to your winter bucket list is back for its third year at the former Downsview Airport lands.
Hangar Skate takes over an old airplane hangar, and officially opens today December 20 running until Family Day weekend in February 2025.
Until January 5, guests can enjoy free Holiday Skating daily between 12 – 5 p.m. on a massive 4,500-square-foot refrigerated rink surrounded by vibrant art installations.
After the 5th, skating will be available on weekends until February 17, featuring live DJs on Fridays, free lessons on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and drop-in arts programming at the YZD Experience Centre.
To kick the season off, Hangar Skate will host its first-ever lighting ceremony tonight to mark the skating rink’s grand opening, along with the debut of the YZD Holiday Market.
The celebration will feature mesmerizing fire-and-ice performers, DJ Skate nights, and engaging art workshops, as well as a breathtaking new interactive art installation.
Taking center stage, the LED wall art is an interactive piece which responds to touch, which was originally showcased at Ottawa’s Winterlude festival.
After your skate, browse the YZD Holiday Market’s array of local vendors offering handcrafted goods, artisanal foods, and unique holiday gifts.
Don’t have skates? Rentals are available for just $5 for adults, while children under 12 can rent skates for free.
Hangar Skate is a free event, but advance booking is required to secure your spot on the rink.
