It’s official – as of today, Hudson’s Bay has begun the liquidation process of all but six stores across Canada, including its online website.
Canada’s oldest company received court approval on Friday to begin liquidating 90 of its 96 stores starting Monday, a decision made after Hudson’s Bay struggled in recent years to repay its debts, which lead to its filing for creditor protection back on March 7, 2025.
Six stores will not be immediately liquidated for now, which includes three in Ontario: The Bay’s Toronto flagship store at Yonge and Queen, Yorkdale Shopping Centre, and Hillcrest Mall.
In addition, three stores in the Greater Montreal Area will remain open, which are the downtown location, Carrefour Laval, and Pointe-Claire.
However, these locations are not guaranteed to remain open indefinitely. Hudson’s Bay is currently negotiating with the landlords of these stores to explore restructuring opportunities, but if no solution is found quickly, these stores could also face liquidation.
After Hudson’s Bay’s initial filing for creditor protection on March 7, the company was granted a 10-day stay by the court. When they failed to obtain sufficient financing, the liquidation process became the next course of action.
The move unfortunately puts over 9000 jobs at risk, with severance claims for employees possibly exceeding $100 million.
For any shoppers intending to take advantage of the liquidation sale, keep in mind that Hudson Bay’s loyalty program has already been suspended, affecting over 8.2 million customers who collectively hold about $59 million in unused points. Gift cards will only be accepted until April 6, 2025.
The company must complete liquidation, closure, and vacate all remaining affected locations by the middle of June 2025.
As for online, liquidations sales have already started as well. Shoppers can use discount code “SAVE” to take 15 percent off purchases of $200, 20 percent off $250, and 25 percent off $300 or more.
Sale and clearance items are also included in the sale, and discounts are expected to get bigger in the coming days and weeks.
Hopefully you can snag some great deals off those pieces you’ve been eyeing!
