Road trips are one of the best ways to make the most of Ontario’s short but sweet summer season, and the Long Sault Parkway might just be one of the most gorgeous drives in the province.
Stretching for 10km long over the St. Lawrence River, you’ll find the seasonal parkway located west of Cornwall halfway between Kingston and Montreal, just a few minutes away from Highway 401.
It’s approximately a 3.5 hour drive to get there from Toronto, ideal for an overnight camping trip or pitstop on your way to the eastern part of Ontario.
Not only does the road span across eleven lush islands, but it’s also a popular summer getaway destination for swimming, biking, fishing, and camping.
Formed during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway during the 1950s, the area was flooded on purpose to create the Moses-Saunders Power Dam. Once flooded, it only left behind the highest points of land, forming the eleven islands visible today.
Home to three waterfront campgrounds, you can extend your stay and spend the night listening to the soothing sounds of the lake.
The park’s two sandy beaches, Mille Roches and Woodlands, are perfect for picnicking or sunbathing at. The larger of the two, Mille Roches, also has amenities like water sport activities and a snack bar.
For history buffs, you can learn about the region’s past at the Lost Villages Museum found on Long Sault.
Long Sault Parkway is open only during the warmer months, typically from late April through November depending on the weather.
Time to curate your perfect playlist and head out on an epic roadtrip!
