Well, it was nice while it lasted!
The mild fall weather we’ve been experiencing all November long is about to take a dramatic turn, as a substantial snowstorm could bring a blanket of heavy snow and freezing rain to Ontario by the end of this weekend.
Meteorologists are predicting a significant pattern change beginning later this week as cold, Arctic air moves in from the Prairies, creating ideal conditions for lake-effect snow bands off the Great Lakes. While northern parts of the province are expected to be hit harder, this system is also anticipated to reach the GTA between Thursday and Friday.
Areas like Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay could see snow exceed 15 centimeters starting tonight, with Eastern Ontario receiving special weather advisories for freezing rain.
Environment Canada’s Toronto forecast predicts a 40% chance of snow or rain on Thursday, November 28, with snow flurries likely overnight and into the following days.
Some models even indicate parts of Ontario could experience upwards of 50cm by the end of the weekend!
As the snowfall is expected to be the first significant lake-effect snow of the season, Environment Canada cautions that we could see widespread disruptions and motorists should be prepared and exercise caution.
“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions,” Environment Canada warns.
“If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”
If you haven’t yet, get those snow tires on and drive safe!
