If you stumble upon a giant mound of sand under the Gardiner Expressway this June, don’t worry, you’re not dreaming. It’s Sand Flight, an immersive new performance making its world premiere at The Bentway, and it promises to be unlike anything Toronto has seen before.
Running June 12 to 15, Sand Flight is a bold, one-hour site-specific work from acclaimed Norwegian choreographer Ingri Fiksdal and theatre director Jonas Corell Petersen. The performance unfolds on and around a 18-foot sand dune built beneath the expressway, brought to life by eight contemporary dancers and a 50-person live choir from VIVA Singers Toronto.
Audiences will be transported to a speculative future where climate change has reshaped the city, where shade becomes sacred and shade-worshipping rituals rise as a response to rising temperatures and shifting winds. As dancers traverse the surreal landscape, their movement explores the tension between urban infrastructure, nature, and newly imagined traditions.
Tickets operate on a Pay-What-You-Choose model, with options ranging from $10 to $30, and children five and under get in free. Seating is general admission and first-come, first-served, and you are encouraged to bring blankets, cushions, and sun protection.
Rush Line tickets will also be available on-site 60 minutes before each showtime. These are first-come, first-served and weather-dependent, so be sure to arrive early!
