Toronto’s downtown core is about to get a major dose of music, fashion, art, and culture, with one of the city’s best-known public spaces hosting a free three-day festival this weekend.
After making its debut as Sankofa Day last year, the celebration is coming back bigger in 2026 as SankofaFest, taking over Sankofa Square from August 21 to 23 for a full weekend of cultural programming.
Rooted in the Akan concept of Sankofa – a philosophy centred on looking to the past to help shape a stronger future – the festival will bring together Afrodiasporic music, fashion, art, food, and family-friendly activities throughout the weekend.
The festivities begin on Friday, August 21, with a day dedicated to fashion and culture. Visitors can explore an open-air marketplace featuring curated vendors and food stalls, while live visual artists create throughout the space.
As the evening gets underway, pop-up performances and DJ sets will lead into a series of runway shows presented in partnership with African Fashion Week Toronto, bringing high fashion and African-inspired design into the heart of downtown.
Then, on Saturday, August 22, SankofaFest will transform into a massive outdoor block party celebrating Afrobeats, Dancehall, and sounds from across the global African diaspora. The day will feature live dancers, DJ collectives, and musical performances, with the festivities building toward a headline performance from Grammy Award-winning singer Mýa at 8 p.m.
The weekend wraps up on Sunday, August 23, with programming focused on family, youth, and community as part of the official global commemoration of Sankofa Day. There will be plenty to keep visitors busy, including youth basketball clinics hosted by Hoop Queens, DJ workshops led by Killa Kels, live art experiences, and a special showcase celebrating Black Canadian women in music.
To cap off the festival, guests can settle in for an outdoor movie screening presented in partnership with the Caribbean Film Festival. The best part? The entire festival is free to attend.
