When you think of Toronto, typically the first thing that comes to mind is towering skyscrapers, a bustling downtown, multicultural neighbourhoods, and bumper-to-bumper traffic. However, just east of the city’s center lies one of Toronto’s most stunning natural wonders, which will transport you a world away from the concrete jungle of the city.
The Scarborough Bluffs, often referred to simply as “the Bluffs”, are a hidden gem featuring dramatic cliffs, scenic parks, a sandy beach, and panoramic views of Lake Ontario.
Stretching along Lake Ontario’s shoreline for 15 kilometres, the escarpment is comprised of a series of towering, white cliffs, extending from the Eastern Beaches to East Point Park.
Formed over 12,000 years ago by the natural processes of wind and water erosion, these geological formations rise up to 90 meters high in some areas.
From the top of the Bluffs, the majestic views look out over Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline in the distance. Home to 11 parks total, Bluffer’s Park is its most popular, with a sandy beach, marina, and picnic areas. It is also the only spot you can go swimming at.
Other points of interest include Cudia Park, a quieter destination with forested trails, plants, and place for bird watching, or Cathedral Bluffs Park which has one of the area’s best vantage points high above the lake.
Keep in mind that while you may see photos from the ledge of the Bluffs, fences have been installed to prevent people from doing so, as the ground is unstable due to erosion. Hundreds of tickets have been issued to trespassers over the years, and numerous people have had to be rescued from falling down the escarpment. Sadly, some have even died from their injuries.
Be sure to adhere to the warning signs, and enjoy the sights from a safe distance.
