On April 8, the first visible solar eclipse since 2017 is occurring in the skies above Toronto, and you definitely don’t want to miss it as it will be the last near-total eclipse until 2099.
The rare celestial event is an incredible phenomenon, but watching it without proper protection could seriously damage your eyes or even cause blindness. Therefore, you’ll want to pick up some eclipse glasses ahead of time.
A number of places in Toronto are offering solar eclipse glasses for free or have them for sale, and here’s where you can find them:
1. Toronto Public Library branches
The Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics has teamed up with Toronto Public Library to hand out free eclipse viewing glasses, available at the circulation desks of Toronto Public Library branches. The branches have a limited supply, so pick yours up as early as possible.
2. Warby Parker
From April 1, Warby Parker stores are giving away free, ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses at all locations until the 8th (while supplies last). Stores will hand out up to two pairs per family.
3. Henderson Brewing Company
Henderson Brewing Company is throwing in a free pair of eclipse glasses when you purchase 8 cans of beer on their website. You can also just add the glasses into your cart for an additional $4 to buy them separately.
4. The Toronto Zoo
If you’re heading to the Toronto Zoo to witness the eclipse, a complimentary pair of glasses is included with the purchase of your ticket. Watch the event go down from your favourite exhibit, and take note if the animals behave any differently when the sky goes dark.
5. PPE Supply Canada
PPE Supply Canada sells ISO-certified glasses to safely watch the eclipse with, and they also have a store in Liberty Village at 23 Atlantic Ave to pick them up from. They are a bit pricier than the aforementioned options, but if you’re in a crunch for a pair, they at least still have them in stock.
