Just a few hours’ drive from Toronto lies a destination so striking, you might forget you’re still in Ontario.
For those looking for a change in scenery without hopping on a plane, Tobermory is a bucket list destination within the province that provides striking cliffside views, lush forests, and waters so turquoise they’re reminiscent of the Mediterranean Sea.
Located at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula, this small harbour village is roughly a five hour drive from Toronto, making it the perfect weekend getaway. Found between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, the water is strikingly clear – but be warned, it’s colder than it looks!

Perfect for nature-lovers and explorers, Tobermory is home to Fathom Five National Marine Park, Canada’s first national marine conservation area. Within the marine park lies over 20 historic shipwrecks, which visitors can snorkel or scuba dive to.
If you’re not a fan of submerging yourself in water as cold as an ice bath, there are also multiple glass-bottom boat tours of the wrecks, while simultaneously treating you to panoramic views of the surrounding islands and shoreline.
The main attraction of the region is known as the Grotto, a natural sea cave carved out of the limestone cliffs within Bruce Peninsula National Park. Framed by towering cliffs and dense forest, the Grotto’s sparkling turquoise water makes it one of the most photographed sights in the entire province.
Across the bay, you can also take a Zodiak tour to Flowerpot Island, another awe-inducing destination famous for its natural rock pillars that resemble “flowerpots”, as well as historic light station, rare plants, and caves. Many tours from Tobermory allow you to spend half or a full day on the island to hike, picnic, swim, and explore.

The village of Tobermory itself is small but charming, especially during the warmer months. Grab a bite of fresh fish at one of the local restaurants, stroll the docks with an ice cream, and pick up a gift or two at the various souvenir shops.
Tobermory also serves as the departure point for the Chi-Cheemaun ferry, which connects the Bruce Peninsula to Manitoulin Island, another hidden gem filled with Indigenous culture, beaches, and a magical waterfall you can swim under.
As summer winds down, now is the perfect time to plan a road trip to Tobermory. A few hours on the road is all it takes to reach one of the most spectacular corners of the province – no passport required.
