A summer escape to waters that look as turquoise as the Mediterranean might be closer to home than you think.
If you’re craving a dramatic change of scenery without the hassle of airport security, Tobermory is the ultimate Ontario bucket-list destination. Perched at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula, this charming harbour village offers a surreal escape filled with lush forests, rugged cliffs, and waters so impossibly clear you’ll have to see them to believe them.
It’s roughly a five-hour drive from Toronto, making it the perfect candidate for a weekend getaway. Tucked between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, the area is visually stunning – though fair warning, those inviting waters are significantly colder than they look!
For nature lovers, Tobermory is the gateway to Fathom Five National Marine Park, Canada’s first national marine conservation area. The park is a graveyard of history, home to over 20 preserved shipwrecks that snorkelers and scuba divers can explore. If you’d rather stay dry, there are plenty of glass-bottom boat tours that offer a front-row seat to the wrecks while treating you to panoramic views of the surrounding shoreline.
The region’s true showstopper, however, is the Grotto. Carved out of the limestone cliffs within Bruce Peninsula National Park, this natural sea cave is framed by dense forest and towering rock formations. Its sparkling, bright blue water makes it one of the most photographed and sought-after sights in the entire province.
Across the bay, you can also hop on a Zodiak tour to Flowerpot Island. Famous for its iconic natural rock pillars, which really do resemble flowerpots, the island is also a treasure trove of rare plants, historic light stations, and hidden caves. Many visitors dedicate a full day here to hiking, picnicking, and swimming in the refreshing waters.
When you’re done exploring, the village of Tobermory itself offers a cozy atmosphere to wind down. Grab some fresh local fish at one of the village restaurants, stroll along the docks with an ice cream, or browse the local souvenir shops for a memento of your trip.
Tobermory also serves as the departure point for the Chi-Cheemaun ferry, which connects the Bruce Peninsula to Manitoulin Island. If you have extra time, that journey is an adventure in itself, leading to another hidden gem brimming with Indigenous culture, sandy beaches, and waterfalls you can actually swim under.
