A glowing ice trail tucked inside a gorgeous forest is returning this season, and it’s one of Ontario’s most enchanting winter escapes just a few hours north of the city.
Each winter, Arrowhead Provincial Park transforms into a frozen wonderland with the opening of its beloved 1.3-kilometre outdoor skating trail. As the longest man-made ice path in the province, the loop leads you through a dense canopy of evergreen trees, and is a must-visit for anyone looking to embrace the colder months.

While the trail is incredibly scenic during the day, it truly comes alive during the park’s iconic Fire and Ice Nights. On Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 – 9 p.m., the forest is transformed as hundreds of flickering tiki torches line the path, casting a warm, golden glow across the ice.
It has quickly become a bucket-list experience for Toronotonians, and was even named one of the “World’s Most Stunning Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks” by Travel and Leisure.

Located roughly two and a half hours from Toronto, the park has become extremely popular in recent years, meaning planning ahead is essential. Due to its immense popularity, the trail often hits capacity, and visitors are required to secure a permit in advance.
Booking must be made via the Ontario Parks website under the “Day Use + Fire and Ice Evening Skate” section. If you don’t have your own gear, the park pavilion offers skate rentals on-site. Be sure to arrive early, as equipment is first-come, first-served.

For those looking for more adventure, the park also boasts over 28 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, with full equipment packages available for rent.
The skating trail at Arrowhead typically opens in January, and is weather dependent. Keep an eye on the park’s website and snow report for this season’s official opening date.
