Don’t put those shovels away just yet!
While the city is still recovering from this past week’s snow storm, another even larger one is expected to hit Toronto and surrounding areas this Family Day long weekend.
After receiving 20 cm of snow overnight Wednesday leading to the cancellation of schools, flights, and more, an incoming low-pressure system could bring anywhere from 15-30 cm on Saturday through Sunday.
What will start as a light snowfall across much of Ontario on Saturday morning and afternoon, conditions are expected to worsen significantly throughout the day.
According to The Weather Network, another weather system will begin merging with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, intensifying the storm’s impact by Saturday evening. This development will enhance snowfall rates and increase wind gusts heading into Sunday.
While the storm’s exact track remains uncertain, the forecast predicts snowfall rates could reach 2-3 cm per hour throughout Sunday, combined with increasing wind gusts. The system is expected to exit the region by Sunday evening, leaving behind significant snowfall accumulations.
Most of the GTA, southern, and eastern Ontario should prepare for 15-30 cm of snow through Monday.
Once the storm departs, temperatures will plummet into the minus teens with the arrival of Arctic air. Strong winds out of the northwest will cause blowing and drifting snow, potentially creating treacherous whiteout conditions particularly in areas north of the GTA.
The network cautions to avoid non-essential travel across southern and eastern Ontario in anticipation of the storm, as well as keep in mind that cancellations, closures, and flight delays are likely.
Stay safe, Toronto!
