In celebration of Diwali approaching on October 20, Toronto is once again hosting its epic Festival of Lights this weekend for the third annual event, taking over Nathan Phillips Square on October 11 and 12.
Presented by BMO, it is the largest Diwali celebration in the city, and will transform downtown Toronto into a colourful hub of South Asian culture.
Taking place daily from noon to 10 p.m., visitors can expect a mix of traditional and modern performances, from classical Indian dance and Bollywood beats to live DJs and cross-cultural collaborations that celebrate the diversity of Toronto.
Over 1000 local and international artists will be featured at this year’s event – and it’s totally free to attend! There will also be a festival marketplace with a range of stalls filled with handmade crafts, jewelry, festive décor, clothing, and authentic Indian street food.
From sizzling samosas and savoury dosas to rich sweets like gulab jamun, the food stalls will transport you on a journey through the flavours of South Asia.
To cap off the celebration, visitors can look forward to a Toronto’s only Diwali-themed musical fireworks show, where pyrotechnics will be synchronized with both traditional and contemporary Indian music.
For anyone looking to set off their own fireworks on their property, keep in mind that a permit is required from the city, and can only be set off until 11 p.m. Fireworks are not allowed in parks or on the street, and please be mindful of pets, neighbours, and the environment.
Have a safe and happy Diwali, everyone!
