Just in time for Canada Day celebrations, the city’s first major heat wave of the season is rolling in – and this is your sign to track down the nearest air-conditioned sanctuary or public pool.
Step outside this week and you’ll practically be transported to a tropical rainforest, courtesy of an intense high-pressure system. Home to soaring UV indexes and a humidex that is pushing values straight into the low 40s, the current forecast has transformed the Greater Toronto Area into a total sweatbox. And if you are planning to head out for the holiday, you’ll need to prepare for some serious sunshine.
What is the forecast for the week?
The week ahead is largely defined by a “long duration heat event” that has prompted Environment Canada to issue a rare orange alert for the city. The Rainforest-like humidity will peak on Wednesday and Thursday, with daytime highs expected to hover between 34°C and 37°C. Even when the sun goes down, the city will offer very little relief, as overnight lows are only dropping to a sticky 21°C.
We’re also in for the chance of some dramatic afternoon weather; because the excessive humidity acts as fuel for active systems, there is a risk of pop-up thunderstorms tracking across the GTA almost every day through Saturday. Keep an eye out for darker clouds if you’re down by the waterfront or catching outdoor celebrations.
If you’re eager to escape the swelter, the city’s public libraries, community drop-ins, and designated cooling centres are open to help you escape the worst of the midday sun. To save your energy, experts suggest shifting outdoor workouts to the early morning hours or waiting until well after sunset.
But, if you are planning to celebrate Canada Day or take in the summer festivities outside, hydration is your best friend. Remember to pack a reusable water bottle, seek out the shade, and look out for vulnerable neighbours who might need a hand staying cool. The heavy humidity is expected to finally break by Sunday, dropping back to a much more manageable 28°C.
Stay cool, Toronto!
