It’s the end of an era!
Toronto basketball fans are still reeling from the shocking news this morning that Masai Ujiri, vice-chairman and president of the Toronto Raptors, is officially parting ways with the team.
Ujiri had been with the team for 13 seasons, and lead the team to win the NBA title in 2019. The team also made the playoffs for seven straight seasons under his guidance, ranging from 2013-2014 to 2019-2020.
His departure comes before the final year of his latest five-year contract extension.
Ujiri is widely respected in the NBA and has built quite the legacy for himself, known for his bold decisions including the blockbuster trade for Kawhi Leonard in 2018 a year before they became NBA champions.
“During his 13 seasons with the Raptors, Masai has helped transform the organization on the court and has been an inspirational leader off it,” MLSE President & CEO Keith Pelley said after the news came out.
“He brought an NBA Championship to Toronto and urged us to believe in this city, and ourselves. We are grateful for all he has done and wish him and his family the very best. As we plan for the franchise’s future, and its return to the NBA Playoffs, a search for the successor as president of the Raptors, led by CAA Executive Search, will begin immediately.”
Beyond the court, Ujiri has also spearheaded numerous social and community initiatives, including his Giants of Africa foundation, which focuses on youth empowerment and basketball development across the African continent.
As of the time of writing, no details are available as to who will replace Ujiri as president. General manager Bobby Webster will run the Raptors in the meantime.
As speculation swirls about who might replace Ujiri and what’s next for him, fans and analysts alike are reflecting on his monumental impact. One thing is certain: Masai Ujiri will hold a place in the hearts of Toronto Raptors fans forever.
