Toronto may currently be experiencing its longest cold stretch of below zero temperatures in years, but brighter days are on the horizon!
As of tomorrow, January 10, the sun will once again start setting after 5 p.m. again, marking the end of over a 60-day period since the city last experienced post-5 p.m. sunsets in November 2024.
Though winter only officially just begun less than three weeks ago, the shift to longer days offers some welcome relief for us winter-weary Canadians.
The winter solstice fell on December 21, 2024, marking the shortest day of the year. On that day, the sun set at 4:44 p.m.
Since then, sunsets have gradually crept later, building towards the longest day of the year: the summer solstice, falling on June 20. On that evening, the sun will set at 9:03 p.m. in Toronto.
Unfortunately, longer days does equate to warmer temperatures just yet, with the Weather Network anticipating a “more active weather pattern” coming in the latter half of January.
Once the deep freeze ends, milder conditions should return to eastern regions of the U.S., the network states this will “pave the way for storm systems to develop and move toward the Great Lakes.”
Ugh.
For now, let’s appreciate the promise of brighter evenings!
