The Toronto Zoo just welcomed a ridiculously cute new resident, and they want your help to give her the perfect name.
Just a few days ago, a rare southern hairy-nosed wombat joey emerged from her mother’s pouch, affectionately known on social media as #TZPouchPotato. To celebrate, animal lovers across the city are being invited to cast their vote and give her an official moniker.

From tiny glimpses of the baby exploring her habitat to updates shared using the hashtag #TZPouchPotato, you’ll get to follow along as she builds up the courage to spend more time outside the pouch. The zoo’s partners at the Australian Consulate in Toronto helped curate the final shortlist of name options, and full pouch emergence is expected later this fall!
Follow the zoo’s social channels for adorable video updates, or see if you can catch a tiny peek of the pouch-dwelling toddler in person during your next visit to the Australasia Pavilion. Voting is completely free and runs until Wednesday, September 30 at 11:59 p.m., with a limit of one entry per email.
Admission tickets to the Toronto Zoo are $29.00 for adults 13 to 64, $24.00 for seniors 65 and older, and $19.00 for children ages 3 to 12, with free entry for toddlers under 2. Grab your tickets online in advance to guarantee your timed entry slot!
The Toronto Zoo is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the Australasia Pavilion accessible during regular operating hours.
