Golden hour lovers, get your cameras ready – one of Toronto’s best sunsets of the year is happening later this October!
You may have heard of “Chicagohenge” or “Manhattanhenge” before, but did you know our beloved city has a henge of our very own?
Coined by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who first gave the rare celestial event in New York its name, “cityhenges” occur when the sun rises or sets in alignment with a city’s grid pattern, meeting the horizon between towering city buildings.
If it sounds familiar, it is in fact a nod to Stonehenge, the historical landmark comprised of raised rocks in England in which many flock to observe on the Summer Solstice.
As for “Torontohenge,” the phenomenon occurs when the sunset perfectly aligns with the city’s east-west streets, and only occurs twice a year at sunrise and sunset.
Many local photographers will take to the streets to try to capture the perfect image when the sun is aligned right between the skyscrapers.
While Toronto had its first Torontohenge back in February, the second and final one of 2024 will occur on October 25, 2024 at 6:17 p.m. EDT.
For the best view, the following streets are your best bets to capture the upcoming Torontohenge:
- Wellington Street W
- King Street W
- Adelaide Street W
- Richmond Street W
Fingers crossed we’ll be treated with clear skies on the 25th!
