Right before summer turns to fall, there’s one more magical outing to add to your calendar to help ease the transition.
You may have seen lantern festivals on your feed before, and now, Toronto is getting its own where you’ll be surrounded by thousands of floating lanterns after making one of your own.
The Water Lantern Festival is a family-friendly event taking place at Downsview Park on September 21, 2024.
Each guest will get to design their own lantern, and are encouraged to write a wish, hope, dream, or something they’re grateful for before releasing it into the water.
Said to bring “therapeutic power”, the website states that the festival will bring friends, family, neighbours, and strangers together in a peaceful, memorable experience.
The lanterns are all composed of rice paper and wood, and the staff collect all lanterns after the event so you don’t have to worry about littering. The LED candles within are reused and recycled.
Tickets to the Water Lantern Festival start at $38.75 per adult, and include the following:
- Wristband for entry into the festival area with access to food trucks
- Floating lantern kit
- LED candle
- Commemorative drawstring bag
- Conversation cards
- Playing cards

- Lantern retrieval and water clean-up
The event is expected to sell out fast, so grab your tickets soon!
