After last week’s epic Northern Lights, we’re in for another treat in Toronto this evening.
Tonight, one of the largest and brightest supermoons in recent years will rise above Ontario, appearing roughly 14 percent brighter and closer than usual.
The Hunter’s Moon, which is also a supermoon, will reach its closest point to Earth today, according to Space.com. A supermoon occurs when a full moon is within 90 percent of its nearest approach to Earth.
While it officially reached its full phase at 7:26 a.m. this morning, NASA notes that it will appear full for about three days surrounding this time.
“This is not only the biggest and brightest Full Moon of 2024, but also the brightest Hunter’s Moon in 17 years,” reported the Weather Network.
Thanks to clear skies in the forecast, tonight will be prime viewing for the Hunter’s Moon, which is expected to rise at 6:29 p.m. in the Greater Toronto Area.
If you miss this supermoon, don’t worry—there will be one more opportunity to see a supermoon this year, the fourth and final one of 2024, on November 15, 2024.
Happy moon-gazing tonight, Toronto!
