Summer is almost here, and if you’re searching for a unique way to cool off beyond the concrete jungle, a refreshing day trip is waiting just a 1.5 hour drive southwest of the city.
Located in Dunnville, Byng Island Conservation Area is a 190-hectare hidden gem managed by the Grand River Conservation Authority, offering the perfect blend of raw nature and summer recreation – including a jaw-dropping, record-sized swimming destination.
While the conservation area features stunning Carolinian forests, winding creeks, wetlands, and direct access to both the Grand River and Lake Erie, the undeniable highlight of the park is its massive outdoor pool.
Holding the proud title of the largest outdoor swimming pool in Canada, this giant body of water spans a whopping 1.85 acres. It is so large that it can comfortably accommodate up to 1,000 swimmers at a single time.
Designed with all ages of visitors in mind, the facility features a dedicated spray pad and shallow wading area perfect for families, a deeper zone equipped with a diving board, and a blue pedestrian bridge running right through the center. Once you have dried off, you can take advantage of the park’s shaded picnic areas to enjoy a lunch or explore the beautiful walking trails cutting through the local forest ecosystems.
If you’re planning a trip, a pool admission wristband is just $3.00 for anyone ages 4 and older (little ones aged 3 and under go free). Just keep in mind that regular park admission fees apply at the gatehouse to enter the conservation area itself ($9.50 for adults and $4.00 for children).
But, if you’re eager to guarantee your spot in the water, you must be willing to arrive early. Because this is a premier summer hotspot, daily visitor capacity is strictly limited and access is not guaranteed if the park fills up. The facility runs daily from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., seven days a week starting June 20 until Labour Day.
