A stretch of Church Street could be getting a major makeover this summer, thanks to a new seasonal pedestrianization pilot project proposed by the Toronto Centre Projects and the Church-Wellesley Village BIA.
For decades, the Village has been a cornerstone of Toronto’s 2SLGBTQ+ culture, and this new initiative is set to transform the neighbourhood into a car-free space “where residents, families, and visitors can gather, connect, and celebrate together.”

Inspired by the success of pedestrian-only zones like Montreal’s Rue Sainte-Catherine, the pilot project would see Church Street closed to vehicle traffic between Wellesley Street East and Alexander Street. While east-west traffic will still be able to cross at Maitland Street, the two-block stretch will be dedicated entirely to people, patios, and public art.
The project is designed to create a safer, more welcoming environment where residents and visitors can linger, shop, and gather without the hum of through traffic.
The timing for the pilot couldn’t be more perfect, as it coincides with several major celebrations in the community. This includes the 519’s 50th Anniversary, the highly-anticipated Cultural District designation coming to City Council in June 2026, as well as FIFA Festivities. The car-free zone will provide a hub for fans and locals to congregate during a summer of international sports.
What to Expect
While you won’t need a ticket to enjoy the open street, the Church-Wellesley BIA is planning a series of activations to keep the energy high. Expect to see local DJs, live performances, and unique art exhibits popping up from June 19 until August 21.
The project is currently in its final planning stages, with a move heading to the Toronto and East York Community Council on April 30. If it clears the final hurdle at City Council in late May, the Village will officially kick off its most walkable summer yet.
If you want to have your say on the future of the street, the city is currently encouraging residents to share their thoughts via a community survey and petition before the summer season begins. You can find the survey as well as more details here on their official website.
