Bad news for Toronto’s plant-based lovers; one of the most popular summer food festivals will be taking an unexpected hiatus for 2026.
For the past 40 years, VegTO Fest has been a huge celebration of all things vegan, serving up a weekend of the best cruelty-free bites in the city. However, organizers recently announced that the massive outdoor festival will not be returning for the 2026 season.

The decision comes after a series of logistical hurdles involving venue availability. According to a statement from the Board of Directors, the city’s upcoming FIFA World Cup festivities played a significant role. While the festival had initially been looking at dates at Nathan Phillips Square, those plans fell through when the space was earmarked for World Cup events.
After exploring several alternate locations, organizers determined that they couldn’t find a spot with the right size and scope to do the 40-year tradition justice.
“We understand that the current economic situation has made it challenging for vendors, sponsors, and attendees… we are taking the time necessary to rethink it,” the organizers shared in a community update.

While the flagship festival is on pause, it’s not all bad news for the city’s vegan community. VegTO plans to pivot toward a slate of smaller, more intimate events, including workshops, seminars, and local pop-ups throughout the year to keep the momentum going.
The goal is to bring the full-scale VegTO Fest back to its former glory in 2027. In the meantime, you can keep an eye on the VegTO website for updates.
