A new nightlife destination is coming to downtown Toronto this summer, and it hopes to bring back the golden age of clubbing.
Complex19 is getting ready to shake up the city’s entertainment scene with a sprawling renovated space and a strict, old-school twist: a total ban on cameras, booths, and bottle service.
In an era where almost every concert, dance floor, and late-night outing is filtered through a phone screen, the owners of Complex19 are taking a bold step backward. The venue will enforce a strict no-camera policy, requiring guests to cover their phone lenses upon entry with a sticker or tuck their devices away entirely.
“We want to make sure that this space is for dancing,” Bradley Blaylock says on a video posted on the page’s Instagram.
“It’s for building friendships, building community. We want it to be a space where people can actually enjoy themselves and not have a blue light allover the dance floor.”
The goal is to foster a truly immersive, present atmosphere where partygoers can lose themselves in the music and the moment without the distraction of flashes, recording, or social media clout. It’s an approach popularized by legendary nightlife capitals like Berlin, and it’s finally making a major footprint in Toronto’s core.
While the strict privacy policy is generating plenty of buzz, the venue itself is set to be a state-of-the-art marvel. Spanning over 8,000 square feet with multiple bars and dance areas, Complex19 has also removed all existing booths and won’t offer bottle service.
In addition, the club will feature a custom, world-class audio system, immersive underground-inspired light installations that enhance the vibe without the need for digital distractions, and a lineup of local and international talent featuring a heavy-hitting roster of global electronic DJs alongside Toronto’s finest local residents.
