Ontario’s Durham region is officially getting a new linear park!
The Durham Meadoway is set to stretch from the Toronto-Pickering border all the way to Harmony Road in Oshawa, transforming a 30-kilometre hydro corridor into a sprawling greenway for walking, cycling, recreation, and nature.
Inspired by Toronto’s successful Meadoway project in Scarborough, the ambitious initiative will breathe new life into underused utility lands, turning them into outdoor spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The project is officially moving ahead thanks to more than $3.3 million in new federal funding, along with contributions from Durham Region and local municipalities. The funding will support preliminary design work, safety improvements, and other early steps needed to bring the new park to life.
In addition, this won’t be your average multi-use trail; the vision for the Durham Meadoway includes four distinct zones designed to offer something for everyone. Plans call for active play areas, peaceful nature spaces, community gardens, and safer road crossings, alongside public art, gathering spaces, local markets, and native plant restoration.
The restored landscapes will also help create important habitat for birds, bees, butterflies, and other local wildlife, bringing more biodiversity into the communities along the route.
Once complete, the Meadoway will connect parks, recreational facilities, neighbourhoods, and existing trails, creating a seamless link to the broader GTA active transportation network. Whether you’re looking to go for a morning bike ride, take a leisurely stroll, or simply escape into nature, the corridor could become a major new destination for outdoor adventures in Durham.
There’s still a bit of a wait before the full transformation takes shape. The preliminary design phase is expected to continue through spring 2028, but the latest funding marks a major step forward for the project.
