Summer in Toronto always feels too short, but the final stretch is arguably the best. The CNE returns to Exhibition Place, the patios are buzzing, and the last of the street festivals take over for one last time before the fall weather returns.
Whether you’re visiting the city or a local making the most of the end of the season, here are some activities to add to your summer bucket list you won’t want to miss!
1. Have a beach day at the Toronto Islands

Summer wouldn’t be complete without at least one day spent on a beach at the Toronto Islands! Catch the ferry from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal or a water taxi from Harbourfront and head to Centre Island, Hanlan’s Point, or Ward’s Island Beach. Want a family-friendly vibe? Centre Island is the spot to be! Don’t want tan lines? Bare it all at the clothing-optional Hanlan’s Point! You can also now hop on a Bike Share rental from one of four locations on the island for easier transportation between the docks and beaches. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
2. Picnic in the park

Enjoy the warm summer days with an outdoor picnic in one of Toronto’s many green spaces! High Park is Toronto’s largest park spanning 399 acres, offering scenic trails, a dog park, and even a free zoo. Other popular destinations include Trinity Bellwoods, Christie Pits, or the Toronto Music Garden. For a more eco-conscious escape, head to the Evergreen Brick Works and snack under the trees or along the quarry trails.
3. Try something new at the CNE

The Canadian National Exhibition, more commonly known to locals as The Ex or the CNE, returns this summer from August 15 through September 1. Every year, the food inventions get wilder and wilder, from ketchup-flavoured ice cream to deep fried pickle Oreos. Don’t knock it ’til you try it! Be sure to check out the midway games and rides while you’re there, or see the line-up for live entertainment this year here on their website.
4. Watch an outdoor movie under the stars

The Toronto Outdoor Picture Show ends August 24, so don’t miss one of this summer’s free movie screenings at a local park near you! This year’s theme When We Were Young explores coming of age films, including Stand By Me, Clueless, and Moonlight. Just pack a blanket, some snacks, and find a good spot on the grass ahead of your movie. See the full screening line-up here on their website.
5. Grab a drink on a rooftop patio

Few things beat sipping a cocktail while taking in the vast, Toronto city skyline. Head to Lavelle, Harriet’s Rooftop, or KŌST for skyline views and summer vibes. Want something more low-key? Try The Broadview Hotel’s east-end rooftop for a cozier crowd. We’ve rounded up a list of our favourites here!
6. Explore a local neighbourhood

Toronto is home to so many unique neighbourhoods, and what better way to spend a summer day than exploring somewhere new? Take an afternoon to wander through Kensington Market, a bohemian enclave known for its vintage shops, global eats, and street art. Just steps away, Chinatown buzzes with authentic dim sum spots and bustling markets. Stroll down Ossington to peruse boutiques, galleries, and indie coffee shops, or visit the Distillery District for European vibes, complete with cobblestone streets and artisanal shops and restaurants.
7. Watch the sunset from Riverdale Park

Riverdale Park East is basically famous for its epic skyline views, and during warm, summer days, locals flock to the 18-hectare park located near Danforth Avenue and Broadview Avenue to catch golden hour and sunset. Pack a picnic basket and blanket and find a grassy patch – every spot has a great view!
8. Take a hike at Scarborough Bluffs

Just east of downtown, you’ll find The Scarborough Bluffs, a breathtaking natural escape from the city’s urban sprawl. Stretching 15 kilometres along Lake Ontario, the Bluffs feature dramatic white cliffs rising up to 90 metres, scenic parks, forested trails, and panoramic views of the lake and skyline. Set out on a hike to take in the views before basking in the sun at Bluffer’s Park, which is the only area with a beach and swimming access.
9. Catch a Jays game

Grab tickets to a Blue Jays game this summer while the dome is open! While you’re cheering them on, indulge in some of this year’s new menu offerings, including Cotton Candy Fries and Dr. Pepper floats. Don’t forget to bring your mitt to catch the odd foul ball!
10. See an outdoor concert at Budweiser Stage

Toronto’s legendary waterfront venue, the Budweiser Stage, is a must-visit summer hotspot for both locals and tourists. This summer, the stage will host major acts like the Goo Goo Dolls, The Who, Shawn Mendes, and Alice Cooper.
