Now that fall has arrived in Ontario, the trees have begun to change into brilliant hues of reds, yellows, and oranges throughout the province. As the season doesn’t last long, what better time than to take full advantage of the mild temperatures and plan an autumn road trip?
With the help of Ontario Parks’ Fall Colour Report interactive map, you can find out precisely where the most vibrant leaves are and time your escape accordingly.
Whether you’re looking for a quick day trip or a weekend getaway, there are countless destinations within a few hours’ drive where you can experience the best of Ontario’s fall foliage. Here are five of the most scenic road trips from Toronto:
1. Algonquin Park

Algonquin Provincial Park is one of Ontario’s most famous fall destinations, and for good reason. Located about three hours north of Toronto, the park is home to over 7,600 square kilometers of forests, lakes, and trails, which look especially brilliant this time of year as the leaves change. In particular, the Highway 60 corridor has been ranked as one of the best destinations in all of North America for fall colours. For the best views, go on a hike at the Lookout Trail or Centennial Ridges Trail for a panoramic view over the treetops.
2. Muskoka

Just two hours north of Toronto, Muskoka has gained a reputation as “The Hamptons of the North” as a summertime playground for celebrities; however, when things quiet down in the fall, it is even more beautiful. Known as cottage country, the region is filled with winding roads, sparkling lakes, and dense forests that glow as autumn hues reflect off the water. A drive along Highway 118 or Highway 169 will take you through charming small towns and past sweeping lake views framed by fall foliage.
3. Prince Edward County

Wine country charm and autumn colours make Prince Edward County an ideal fall road trip destination, roughly two and a half hours east of Toronto. Known as “The County” by locals, the region is dotted with vineyards, orchards, and rolling farmland. During fall, the backroads are lined with bright foliage, making even the simplest drive feel like a you’ve entered a painting. After taking in the colours, visitors can explore local wineries, cideries, and farm-to-table restaurants. A stop at Sandbanks Provincial Park offers stunning views of Lake Ontario with trails framed by golden leaves, perfect for a crisp autumn walk.
4. Blue Mountain

Located two hours northwest of Toronto, Blue Mountain and the surrounding Niagara Escarpment are fantastic spots to see fall colours. The area’s rugged cliffs and sweeping valleys provide the perfect backdrop for the season’s changing leaves, which you can see with a drive along Scenic Caves Road or through the Beaver Valley. Blue Mountain Village itself also embraces the season, hosting fall festivals, farmers’ markets, and outdoor activities. For an even more unique perspective, take the Open-Air Gondola up the mountain and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the colourful canopy below.
5. Kawartha Lakes

About 90 minutes northeast of Toronto, Kawartha Lakes is a quieter but equally beautiful spot to see fall foliage. The region is filled with winding country roads, charming small towns, and a mix of farmland and forest. A drive along Highway 35 or County Road 121 will take you past lakeshores and wooded trails framed with autumn foliage. Stops in towns like Fenelon Falls or Bobcaygeon allow visitors to experience local shops and restaurants while taking in the views.
