Fifty million birds pass through Toronto every spring. That is not an estimate. The city sits at the convergence of two major migratory flyways, and from late April through May, the lakefront and ravine parks fill with warblers, raptors, shorebirds, and songbirds travelling from as far away as the Amazon. Most people walk straight past them.
The City of Toronto‘s Spring Bird Festival on May 23 at Colonel Samuel Smith Park in Etobicoke is the city’s free annual celebration of this migration. Running from 10am to 2pm, the festival includes guided bird walks with expert naturalists, live birds, reptiles, and amphibians on display; a free tree and shrub giveaway, children’s activities, and booths from local birding and environmental organizations. The park is at 3145 Lake Shore Boulevard West and is reachable by TTC.
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority also runs its own Spring Bird Festival at Tommy Thompson Park on the Leslie Street Spit earlier in May.

The 2026 edition ran on May 9 with guided warbler and woodland bird walks starting at 7am, an open Bird Research Station, and community planting activities. Between the two events, birding season in Toronto gets a proper welcome.
Neither festival requires advance registration for general programming, though the early morning guided walks at Tommy Thompson can fill up fast. Bring binoculars if you have them.
Both festivals are designed for all experience levels. This includes people who would not recognize a warbler from a sparrow and are mostly curious about the fuss. Every May, fifty million birds and two free festivals take place in the city. Most people do not know that these events are happening. The birds are not judging.
