Free things in Toronto are hard to come by these days, so why not take advantage of a complimentary Jamaican beef patty this Friday?
On February 23, the Jamaica Tourist Board will be handing out thousands of the delightfully savoury snacks in honour of Jamaican Patty Day.
Between 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., you can grab your treat from Patties Express at the The Bay Union Samples Kiosk pop-up inside Union Station.
You’ll also have a chance to learn more about the island destination, as well as enter for a chance to win a trip for two to Jamaica.
The annual day aims to celebrate the Jamaican Diaspora in the city, and the impact it has made on Toronto’s culinary scene.
Jamaican Patty Day came about from a fight back in the 1980s between Toronto’s Jamaican patty vendors and local food inspectors, where authorities initially claimed patty shops could not call the snack food “beef patties”.
After a number of court battles, the issue was resolved on February 23, 1985, which became known as Jamaican Patty Day in the city. Now, we celebrate the occasion with free patties!
