Toronto drivers received a rare traffic win this week.
A key section of Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway, between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue, fully reopened all six lanes on Monday morning, dramatically ahead of schedule and just in time for the rush hour commute.
The project, originally slated for an April 2027 completion, was fast-tracked thanks to a $73 million provincial investment that funded 24/7 construction. This accelerated timeline means the work is finished well ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The early reopening comes as a major relief to drivers who had endured severe delays. During construction, data showed travel times in the area had increased by up to 230%, with an 8-minute trip typically taking 24 minutes.
A final weekend closure (Spadina to Hwy 427) was required to prepare the roadway. One more tentative weekend closure is planned for November 1, but it will be postponed if the Blue Jays are playing in a World Series Game 7.
