A serene Japanese-style oasis tucked away in the heart of the suburbs is about to burst into colour, offering a tranquil alternative to the city’s crowded blossom hotspots.
As spring returns, parks in and around Toronto will soon come alive with lush greenery and the beloved cherry blossoms that attract visitors from across the province every late April. While High Park and Trinity Bellwoods often steal the spotlight, Mississauga’s Kariya Park remains a lesser-known hidden gem for those looking to see the delicate blooms without the massive crowds.

Located just steps away from the bustling Square One Shopping Centre, this peaceful escape was opened in 1992 to honour the sister-city relationship between Mississauga and Kariya, Japan. As soon as you step through the gates, you’re transported into a space inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics, complete with a koi pond, a pavilion, and authentic sculptures gifted directly from Japan.
The park is home to roughly 80 cherry blossom trees of varying varieties and hues. During peak bloom, the entire grounds transform into a breathtaking pink wonderland. Because the bloom period is notoriously short (typically lasting only 7 to 10 days), timing is everything if you want to catch the trees in their prime.

Beyond the iconic Sakura trees, the park offers a sensory journey along a serene cascade waterfall, a hand-carved stone tsukubai basin, and a Friendship Bell that rings on ceremonial occasions. You’ll also find vibrant rhododendrons, red Japanese maples, and a marsh filled with Japanese irises, making it an incredibly tranquil escape for a spring stroll.
If you’re planning a visit to see the blossoms this year, keep an eye on Sakura Steve’s blog for when to expect peak bloom.
Kariya Park is located at 3620 Kariya Dr. and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., giving you plenty of time to soak in the views before the petals start to fall.
