The best part of spring in Toronto is just around the horizon as the cherry blossoms in Toronto have officially entered their next phase.
High Park’s beloved sakura trees are finally waking up, with the latest “Sakura Watch” update confirming that the cherry blossom buds have reached Stages 3 and 4. Thanks to a recent stretch of warmer weather, the park’s iconic trees are progressing quickly, bringing us one step closer to the fleeting window of peak bloom.
According to the blog, as the buds move into Stage 3, the tips have begun to expand, revealing the individual florets tucked inside. While they currently sport green and bronze tones, they will soon transition into a deep pink as they emerge further.
In several areas of the park, trees have already hit Stage 4, where the elongated stems of the florets are visible, and a few “eager blossoms” are even showing tiny hints of white petals.
While the city has seen its fair share of rain lately, the buds remain healthy and resilient. The biggest question mark remains the fluctuating spring temperatures. While a brief cold snap is expected over the next few days, experts suggest the buds are still tucked away safely enough to withstand a dip below freezing without any major setbacks.
When Will Peak Bloom Happen?
Despite the recent burst of growth, don’t expect an unusually early arrival. Current predictions suggest the bloom will stay on a traditional schedule, likely beginning toward the end of April and stretching into the first week of May. Of course, in true Toronto fashion, it all comes down to the unpredictable spring forecast; a few days of 20 degree sunshine could fast-track the show, while a lingering chill might keep us waiting just a little longer.
