Cherry blossom season has finally arrived, and a lesser-known waterfront park near Toronto plans to celebrate this weekend beneath a breathtaking canopy of pink and white blooms.
For decades, the blooming of the Sakura trees throughout Toronto has been a signature seasonal spectacle, and this year, the nearby city of Burlington is turning the floral display into a full-blown cultural extravaganza. The city is set to honor the 37th anniversary of its twinning agreement with Itabashi, Japan, with a day dedicated to the centuries-old tradition of hanami, the Japanese art of flower viewing.

Taking place this year on May 9, 2026, the annual Sakura Festival, hosted by the Burlington Mundialization Committee. The festivities kick off with Burlington’s own Do Kon Daiko drumming group, followed by greetings from Mayor Marianne Meed Ward and Consul General of Japan MATSUNAGA Takeshi.
Attendees can expect a lineup of performances, including martial arts demonstrations of Karate, Aikido, and Iaido, traditional dance Suzuran odori performances and a high-octane yosakoi dance finale by Sakuramai Toronto, as well as a headline performance by the internationally renowned taiko group, Nagata Shachu.
The event bridges the gap between the two twin cities through art, featuring a special gallery of work created by elementary students from both Frontenac Public School and Itabashi’s Fujimidai Public School.
How To Experience The Magic
The stars of the show, of course, are the cherry blossom trees located throughout Spencer Smith Park. These delicate Sakura typically reach their peak bloom between late April and early May, transforming the lakeside into a dreamy, postcard-worthy destination.

While the event is completely free for everyone to enjoy, organizers remind visitors to practice proper viewing etiquette to ensure the trees stay healthy for years to come. To protect the sensitive blooms, guests are asked to stay on the established trails and refrain from climbing the branches or plucking the flowers.
This year’s Sakura Festival will take place on Saturday, May 9 from 1 – 3:30 p.m. at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre.
