For outdoor lovers looking to escape the city, Pancake Bay Provincial Park boasts over three kilometres of soft, white sand shoreline along the grand Lake Superior. Named after 18th-century voyageurs who reportedly whipped up batches of pancakes here before paddling onward, this serene destination feels like a secluded paradise miles away from Toronto’s urban hustle.
Located roughly eight and a half hours north of Toronto and just an hour north of Sault Ste. Marie, Pancake Bay makes for an incredible summer road trip destination. While Lake Superior is known for its chilling depth, this sheltered bay offers shallow, sun-warmed clear waters, making it an ideal spot for a refreshing afternoon swim or a calm paddleboard session.
Beyond its golden beach, the park offers plenty of adventure for nature enthusiasts. You can hike along the Edmund Fitzgerald Lookout Trail to take in breathtaking, panoramic vistas over the lake. Facing west, the shoreline is also one of the prime spots in the region to catch a gorgeous sunset over the horizon.
