It’s not everyday that you’ll come across a roadside retail store with a 26-foot-tall freestanding robot that welcomes you – complete with nearly 2,800 five-star Google reviews.
For years, Primitive Designs in Port Hope has stood as one of Ontario’s most bizarre and beloved roadside attractions, serving as a gateway to another world just minutes off the 401.

As you pull up, you’ll be greeted by the epic robot guarding the entrance to the sprawling 8,000-square-foot gallery – a two-tonne masterpiece of engineering and upcycling that looks like it stepped right out of a sci-fi blockbuster.
Alongside it, you’ll find a massive T-Rex, a life-sized pirate ship complete with a giant octopus, and a collection of exotic curiosities that make this more than just a pit stop.

The main draw is the immersive marketplace atmosphere that feels less like a retail shop and more like a global expedition. Run by a local family who spends months each year hand-selecting treasures from places like Thailand, Nepal, and Morocco, the gallery is packed with everything from hand-carved tiki huts to fossilized dinosaur teeth.
The store’s owners are dedicated to supporting international craftsmanship. They work directly with family-run businesses and welders across the globe to bring these fantastical visions to life, ensuring every piece in the collection has a story to tell.

To access the shop, your admission fee is by donation. It’s also famously dog-friendly, so feel free to bring your four-legged co-pilot along for the adventure.
Primitive Designs is located at 2762 County Road 28 in Port Hope, just a short trip east of Toronto. The shop has officially opened for the 2026 through Christmas Eve, with daily hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
