Located just north of Toronto, Sunflower Fields of Markham opens for a limited time each summer, giving visitors the chance to stroll through more than 400,000 sunflowers spread across 20 acres. It’s one of the easiest countryside escapes from the city.
A family that’s been farming across York, Durham, and Ramara for more than 60 years planted its first sunflower field in 2021 after the third generation decided to try something new. What started as a small experiment has since grown into a popular summer tradition.
Spanning 20 acres, the field is far larger than most people expect, with towering sunflowers lining the walking paths and viewing platforms offering panoramic views across the sea of blooms. If you’re hoping to capture the scale, a wide-angle lens is worth bringing.
A Summer Spectacle
Once you’re inside, there’s no time limit, so you can wander the fields at your own pace until closing. Along the way, you’ll find simple photo props, including a tractor and a swing, adding a little variety to the endless sea of sunflowers.
For the most striking views, visit in the evening. On Fridays and weekends, the farm stays open until 8 p.m., giving visitors the chance to photograph the blooms in warm golden-hour light.
Amenities are limited, so it’s worth planning ahead. Bring water and any snacks you’ll need, and remember that parking is included with admission. Visitors must use the on-site lot, as parking along Highway 48 and on neighbouring properties isn’t permitted.
The sunflowers only stay in bloom for a few weeks each summer, making this one of those seasonal experiences that’s worth catching before it’s gone.

- Hours: Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.–8 p.m. Last entry is one hour before closing
- Tickets: Available online or at the gate. Online tickets can be used on any open day during the season
- Parking: Free with admission. Use the on-site parking lot only—parking along Highway 48 or on neighbouring properties is not permitted
- Good to know: There’s no time limit once you’re inside. Professional photography is welcome, and credit and debit are accepted at the gate
- Visitor rules: Pets (except service animals), drones, smoking, and picking sunflowers are not allowed. Wear comfortable footwear, as paths can be uneven or muddy
