This weekend, David Pecaut Square swaps its usual downtown crowds for author talks, live stages, and rows of books as The Word On The Street returns for its 37th year. The festival brings together readers, writers, publishers, and storytellers from across the country for a free literary celebration in the heart of Toronto.
More than 150 authors and presenters will take part across the two-day festival, with a packed lineup of readings, panel discussions, interviews, and live conversations throughout the weekend.
Visitors can also browse more than 200 vendors and exhibitors, including independent publishers, literary magazines, booksellers, and cultural organizations. With so much to explore, it’s the kind of festival that can easily fill an entire day.
Beyond The Books
Since launching in 1990, the event has grown into one of Canada’s largest celebrations of books, storytelling, and literacy. It has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors while remaining focused on connecting readers with writers and ideas.
The programming reflects that mission by highlighting Canadian and Indigenous voices alongside a diverse range of authors, storytellers, and cultural discussions.

Food vendors near Metro Hall will offer everything from international street food and savoury snacks to sweet treats for visitors between events.
The festival site features washrooms, water stations, seating areas, and accessible paved walkways throughout David Pecaut Square. It’s also easy to reach by transit, with St. Andrew Station just steps away and streetcar stops nearby. If you plan to browse the marketplace, bring a reusable bag—you’ll likely leave with more books than expected.
