We’ve been dreaming about a white Christmas, and it looks like it’s about to come true!
Today, Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory for much of Ontario, including Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), as several rounds of snow are expected to move into the region on Monday, just two days before Christmas.
Snowfall began this morning before a brief break, and will resume with another round later today after 4 p.m.
Accumulation may intensify this afternoon thanks to a clipper system, which may be enhanced by the Great Lakes as the system passes through.
The advisory covers a wide area, stretching from the GTA to Grand Bend, Sault Ste. Marie, Ottawa, and into Quebec. For Toronto and the GTA, Environment Canada predicts total snowfall accumulations of 5 to 15 cm.
The second round should taper into flurries later this evening, bringing a risk of freezing drizzle. Climatologists are advising anyone with last-minute holiday shopping or travel plans to act early, as this afternoon could see slick conditions on the roads.
This snowfall virtually guarantees a white Christmas for Toronto and much of southern Ontario, in addition to the snow that is already on the ground.
While the city experienced the coldest day of the year so far over the weekend, temperatures for Christmas Eve are expected to rise just above freezing, before dropping below freezing overnight into Christmas morning.
Later in the week, snow is expected to begin melting as temperatures climb above freezing and rain enters the forecast, potentially bringing wetter conditions into the weekend.
We can’t wait to see Toronto look like a snow globe just in time for Christmas!
