A one-of-a-kind outdoor cinema experience is taking over an old Toronto runway this fall – and it’s totally free to attend.
Runway Reels is officially returning to YZD this fall for its biggest season yet, bringing four straight weekends of free drive-in and outdoor movie magic under the stars.
Starting October 2, Toronto’s only drive-in and open-air screening event is transforming the historic aviation grounds into a pop-up film screening destination. Spanning across four themed weekends, guests can choose to pull up in their cars for a classic drive-in vibe or bring a blanket to settle into the outdoor seating area.
This year’s edition also gives locals an exclusive sneak peek at The Apron, a brand-new outdoor gathering space at YZD dedicated to food, art, and culture. The site will feature custom furniture painted by OCAD University alumni, alongside colourful local murals and a special Halloween-inspired animated short film created by OCAD students that will screen before the final weekend’s features.
Each evening kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with live pre-show entertainment curated by Small World Music. This includes live bands, local DJs, and drag performances, all before the films start at sunset.
Here is the full line-up for this year’s movie nights:
- Sing It Loud (October 2 & 3): Mamma Mia! and Frozen
- Cult Classics (October 9 & 10): Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie and Shrek 2
- Pop Culture Power (October 16 & 17): Barbie and A Minecraft Movie
- Halloween (October 23 & 24): The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
While admission is completely free, you will need to reserve your spot online in advance. Tickets are available for both drive-in vehicles and walk-in pedestrians.
Runway Reels will run every Friday and Saturday from October 2 to October 24 at YZD, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. Vehicle entry is located at 111 Beffort Ave., while pedestrians can enter at 10 Hanover Rd.
