Zellers fans, get ready for a blast from the past!
Fourteen years after closing its doors at Shoppers World in Brampton back in 2012, it appears that the iconic Canadian discount retailer will soon be heading back to its former home at 499 Main St. S.
The news surfaced after recent site plans released by real estate developer RioCan featured a brand-new storefront marked “coming soon” right in the heart of the shopping center. The update quickly made waves across social media, sparking an instant wave of nostalgia among Greater Toronto Area locals who grew up browsing the department store’s aisles.
While long-time patrons will remember the massive store that used to dominate the mall’s lower wing, this comeback arrives with a modern twist. The new location is launching under the brand’s “Zellers 3.0” initiative. Unlike the expansive, warehouse-style footprints of the 1990s and 2000s, these downsized, standalone storefronts prioritize a curated, quick-shopping experience packed with affordable home decor, apparel, and lifestyle goods.
Zellers originally replaced Kmart at Shoppers World back in 1998, serving the Brampton community for 14 years before shuttering as part of Hudson’s Bay Company’s nationwide wind-down. Following a resurgence of interest after successful pop-ups in 2023, the brand has been steadily building out its standalone presence across Ontario, including opening its first standalone store this past summer in North York.
While RioCan has yet to confirm an official opening date, Brampton residents can keep an eye on the mall’s central wing for updates as construction progresses.
