Toronto is currently getting a rare taste of summer just days before Halloween, and today’s unseasonably warm temperatures are about to break an 80-year-old record.
Today marks the warmest October 29 the city has experienced since 1946, with afternoon temperatures expected to reach a balmy 22 degrees Celsius. If the mercury climbs as expected, it will shatter the city’s previous daily October 29 record of 21.7 C, which has held strong since 1946.
In a sharp contrast to Monday evening’s frost warning, you can happily ditch the heavy winter coats this afternoon and soak up the glorious late-season sunshine. Remarkably, Toronto hasn’t logged a single sub-zero reading since May 3, which is well past the city’s typical mid-October frost date.
Average temperatures for late October typically linger around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, meaning today’s uncharacteristic heat wave is roughly ten degrees above seasonal norms. Just don’t forget an umbrella if you’re out late, though, as scattered evening showers and a few rumbles of thunder are expected to roll into the GTA following the afternoon heat.
While the warm front will peak today, mild weather is set to stick around across southern Ontario right into early November, with no signs of freezing temperatures in the immediate forecast.
