Non-essential trips from Canada to the U.S. are not allowed for another month.
Yes, 2020 has come and gone, but it appears the restrictions at the Canada-U.S. land border are still in place following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of the tenth extension of the original border closure. The extended travel ban is deemed necessary due to the continuing rise of COVID-19 cases in both countries. As a result, non-essential trips to the United States continue to be banned for another 30 days — meaning until February 21, 2021 at least.
Update on the Canada-US border: We’ve extended the current border measures by another 30 days. Non-essential travel between our two countries remains restricted until at least February 21st. We’ll continue to do whatever is necessary to keep Canadians safe.

Under the current Canada-U.S. travel restrictions, Canadians are urged to avoid all non-essential travel south of the border. Moreover, all air passengers over the age of 5 must present a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to their boarding flight to Canada, and anyone who is allowed into the country is required to quarantine for 14 days, otherwise they could face serious fines, penalties or imprisonment.
According to the Government of Canada’s travel advisory FAQ, the definition of what is considered ‘non-essential travel’ is up to each individual. However, they warn that you may encounter the following if you choose to travel despite these advisories:
- You may have difficulty obtaining essential products and services.
- You may have limited access to timely and appropriate health care.
- You may suddenly face strict movement restrictions and quarantines at designated facilities and at your own cost.
- Your insurance may not cover your travel or medical expenses.
- The Canadian government may have limited capacity to offer you consular services.
Attention! If you must travel abroad for essential reasons:
⚠️ You may face strict restrictions at your destination, such as curfews, lockdowns and quarantines.⚠️You must quarantine for 14 days upon your return to 🇨🇦.
