In 1917, the Original Dixieland Jass Band released the very first jazz record spreading the word of improvisation and swing. Since then the world has been gifted with many overpowering and deeply moving voices. Candlelight invites fans of the blues and all that jazz to attend a live music performance inspired by the women of jazz complete with countless candles and a skilled band.
“Day in day out”, jazz music and its smooth sounds win over the soulful and free-spirited. The city will already be in a groovy trance induced by International Jazz Day on April 30, so why not embrace this Candlelight Jazz special featuring Joanna Majoko, the popular Toronto-based singer, for a captivating evening that’ll leave you “feeling good”?
Candlelight Jazz: Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Women of Jazz feat. Joanna Majoko
Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Natalie Cole—just a few of the female artists who have left lasting legacies. As well as experimenting with jazz elements, they explored a wide range of genres, as is the nature of being a jazz or at least jazz-related artist. Simone was also known as “The High Priestess of Soul”, and Peggy Lee as “The Queen of American Pop Music”.
And this May, thanks to the piano, guitar, bass, drums, and rich vocals of Joanna Majoko some of the most enchanting jazz songs of all time are being reimagined inside the beautiful Paradise Theatre. What’s more, on top of performing the likes of Sarah Vaughan’s “Misty” and Nancy Wilson’s “Never Will I Marry”, among others, Majoko will perform tracks from her own album No Holding Back. Don’t miss out on the chance to celebrate jazz greats and an up-and-coming artist!

With two performances taking place on the day, you can choose a concert that suits your schedule. Doors open 45 minutes before the start time.
