When the warm summer days begin to approach, fragrant flowers are in bloom, and you find yourself having to wear less layers, you might also find yourself looking for plans after sunset. In anticipation of Toronto’s vibrant Pride Festival this June, Candlelight is taking over the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto for a concert dedicated to queer musical icons. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience you don’t want to miss.
A talented string quartet will be taking to the candlelit stage to recreate music by some of the greatest pioneers in the music industry such as Frank Ocean, Elton John, Sam Smith, and Fanny Mendelssohn. Whether its being open about their sexuality, remaining unapologetically themselves, or encouraging a conversation, these musical icons are worth celebrating this LGBT Pride Month.
Candlelight Pride: Celebrating Queer Musical Icons
The music industry has numerous legends and gay musical icons paving and having paved the way for the LGBTQ community. Elton John has been inspiring fans for decades since he came out as bisexual in Rolling Stone magazine, Sam Smith’s provocative, and at times controversial, shows express sexuality freely, and Lil Nas X’s debut album, Montero, broke down cultural barriers.
These artists “cannot live in the dark, boy, they cannot pretend” and Candlelight is celebrating their progressive music and ways of life, from Brandi Carlisle’s “The Story” to Janelle Monáe’s “Pynk”. The Listeso String Quartet will be serenading you with classical renditions of well-known hits and compositions showcasing the power of music and its drive for change.
Candlelight at the Metropolitan Community Church
There is no better and more fitting place to stage a Candlelight pride concert than on the grounds of the progressive Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto. Not only is it a renowned Human Rights Center, the MCC Toronto is “rooted in the Christian tradition and the 2SLGBTQ+ community that is open and welcoming to everyone”. The magic created by the breathtaking architecture of the church, a sea of candles, and a welcoming air is incomparable for this special Candlelight event.
The summer symbolizes optimism and hope for the future, and with this positivity supported by warmer days and sunshine, the Candlelight experience is even more enchanting. Immerse yourself in an evening of awe-inspiring musical performances guided by the talent of some of the most popular artists in the world.
The concert takes place at 8pm with doors opening 60 minutes prior to the start time.
